“Prayer Therapy is a conscious connection with Higher Power not in asking for something, but rather acknowledgment and contemplation of God, a communion and relationship with Universal Divine Spirit, and living a life connected to Allah asking only for guidance to stay on the path. This is prayer therapy - an energy medicine creating healing energy.” – Saquina Akanni
Maybe you have wondered if there is a difference between prayer, contemplation and meditation. Generally speaking prayer is asking, contemplation is pondering and meditation is listening.
By definition: Prayer is devout reverent request or entreaty, to ask or beseech, act of making such a devout request or petition, act of communion with one worshiped.
Contemplation is the act of contemplating: attentively, thoughtfully considering or pondering, to meditate, meditation on spiritual matters as a form of devotion, intention and expectation.
Meditation is a devotional discipline, exercise or method of body-mind-spirit development . Meditation is a process that leads to a state of consciousness that brings balance, relaxation, serenity, clarity, harmony and bliss to enhance physical, mental and spiritual health.
Prayer is speaking from ones soul, exploring the depths of oneself in the relation and of life; while listening from the heart allowing the Spirit to speak from silence. This state of speaking and listening deepens the human relationship with the Higher Self and creates the energy healing process.
In Islam, Muslim prayer "IS the Therapy" and has a strict and defined definition.
1) A Consciousness Connection (or Taqwa): Belief that everything was created to praise Allah in its own way and consciousness of the miracle of all creation. Everything from energy, a plant to the cosmos is a Muslim and praises Allah, acknowledges of the purpose of praise, therefor the prayer becomes the act of worship. A Muslim is one who praises Allah, therefore everything is a Muslim. Bismillah is a prayer and the Taqwa.
2) Everything in existence comes from Allah (or Fadl-allah): The Creator owns everything known and unknown and out that, which Allah owns, has been given various portions to you. This is called Niamat.
3) Prayer: Human was created to Praise. Through prayer man Praises Allah. Everything is praise to acknowledge the relationship of the Creator. There are no questions. All praise is due to Allah. Therefore prayer is a conscious connection, a contemplation and meditation. The only asking is for guidance of prayer, praise and acknowledgment and enables the "Believer" to stay in the Light and the Way of Islam.
In Islam for "Believers" the five prayers are among the best acts of worship that the Muslim performs. Performing them is the best deed after having the correct belief in God and His Messenger. Prophet Muhammad, may Allah Peace and Blessings be Upon Him, was asked what the best deed was and he said it was performing the obligatory prayers at the beginning of their times (al-Bayhaqiyy):
When a Muslim say “prayers” it is referring to an act of worshiping God, which has specific rules, rituals, times and a specific format as God revealed to Prophet Muhammad, (APBUH). The prophets from Prophet Adam to Prophet Muhammad, (AOBUP), ordered their followers to pray as per God’s orders.
Since the "prayer" is the most important matter of Islam after having the correct belief in God and His Messenger, a Muslim must plan his life around the prayer. The "prayer" is the Therapy.
Prayer is a Therapy and is a conscious connection process of energy healing that engages the person’s spirit and soul as well as the mind, body, will, and emotions with intention in a conscience process of transformation.
Prayer is always an energy healing process, however many people have not been able to get the help they wanted through praying alone, random praying or from traditional counseling and psychotherapy for the help needed in transforming troubling situations. Even though they might have a belief in the power of prayer, they have not been able access that power to overcome stressful or troubling situation in their life or transform their life with purpose.
Prayer Therapy (PT) is an alternative medicine and energy healing approach to counseling and an alternative to psychotherapy using Christian principals. The human experience is a state of being reflecting the energy of Qi/Chi of mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions (and will). Even though the Greek word for soul is psyche, however Western Medicine and modern psychology has little understanding and nothing to say about the soul. Therefore, the focus is here is on mind, body and behavior and spiritual healing.
Prayer Therapy or PT has a specific format and combines the insights of psychology with the transforming power of prayer to teach one how to pray effectively. The usefulness of prayer as therapy has been studied by researchers at the University of Redlands, started more than 45 years ago when William R. Parker, Ph.D., received a grant from the Religion in Education Foundation to compare the effectiveness of prayer, psychotherapy, and the combination of prayer and psychotherapy. The results of this study was published in 1957, Prayer Can Change Your Life, by Dr. Parker and Elaine St. Johns.
Dr. William R Parker sought to measure the effectiveness of prayer as a tool to assist troubled people in transforming difficult situation. The general conclusion of these studies has demonstrated that a proper understanding of the nature of prayer and a proper application of prayer in human experience has dramatic practical results. Standard scientific methodology was applied and therapy groups formed.
The typical method was to divide people to be counseled into three groups each having fifteen members. Group one would be treated using traditional psychological approaches. Group two would consist of practicing Christians who believe that by daily praying they would be helped. They agreed to pray for resolutions to their problems every day for nine months, just prior to retiring. Group three would receive treatment using a therapeutic model called Prayer Therapy (PT).

"In this model the members of the group would meet for one, two-hour group therapy session per week. At the sessions they were taught the principles of Prayer Therapy (PT) and how to apply them in their daily lives. Prior to any therapy, all of the participants received comprehensive psychological testing. At the conclusion of nine months of therapy each group would be tested again. The data gathered and compared demonstrated that Prayer Therapy provided the greatest measure of help of the three. Typical results for each study have been:
Group One... 65% improvement... (Psychology alone)
Group Two... No improvement... (Random prayer)
Group Three... 72% improvement (Prayer Therapy)"
Group Two... No improvement... (Random prayer)
Group Three... 72% improvement (Prayer Therapy)"
Many of the leading professionals in the mental health field are now recognizing that the family minister is a valuable resource for healing. In the past it was common for a pastor to acquire some paraprofessional competency in counselling and to frequently refer troubled people to the “specialist”. This trend began to develop momentum as long ago as the nineteen sixties with Howard Clinebell, in his book Basic Types of Pastoral Counselling, said, "Pastoral counselling must come of age in both theory and practice. It must find a new level of self-identity and maturity, by deepening its theological roots, broadening its methodology, and discovering its unique contribution to the helping of troubled humanity, with reference to its own heritage and the other helping disciplines."
Three antecedent foundations are critical to the success of Prayer Therapy (PT): Belief, Honesty and Love. First one must believe in the power of prayer. One from a place of love and prayer must be practiced in honesty. Honesty is more difficult than it first appears. The natural tendency of humankind is to support that viewpoint which best suits our own personal interest. Even when one talks to God the human tendency is to manufacture a personal brand of truth.
I can pray for God to take away the demonic oppression (deliverance) but I also need to pray for Him to heal your broken heart (an open door for demonic oppression and mental torment) and I also need to teach you Scripturally based truths and techniques to help you to MAINTAIN, to continue to walk in emotional wholeness. This is the core essence of Prayer Therapy." - Dr. Minnie Claiborne
"A basic definition of the word therapy is the treatments of illness and disease. This applies to physical and mental illnesses. There are many common types of therapies or treatments as we know. Drug therapy, surgery, radiation chemical or chemotherapy are common types of therapies used to treat physical illnesses. Psychotherapy is the treatment of mental or emotional disorders by psychological techniques such as counseling and other methods.
As a solution-focused therapist, with a holistic approach, I am concerned with the whole person: Spirit, Soul and Body. My goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together and invite the healing, comforting power of God to bring peace and resolution in your life. By applying "PRAYER THERAPY" and complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back." - Dr. Minnie ClaiborneThank you for your insight and contribution on Prayer Therapy:
